Patient medical data is increasingly shared between NHS services — for example between GP surgeries and District Nursing — to ensure clinicians have access to the most up-to-date information when caring for you.
How sharing works
The systems we use require that any sharing of medical information is consented to by you beforehand. You must consent separately to:
- your data being shared out from the surgery to other health providers
- which specific providers can access your data
For example, it may be necessary to share GP data with district nurses. However, the local podiatry department would not need to see the same information to undertake their work. In this case, you would consent to sharing with the district nurses but not with podiatry. In this way, access to your data is under your control and shared on a 'need to know' basis.
If you have questions about how your data is shared, or wish to review or change your consent preferences, please speak to a member of staff at reception.
