This website aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard.

1. Scope of This Statement

This accessibility statement applies to the Brunswick Surgery website at www.brunswicksurgery.co.uk and its subpages.

It does not cover third-party services linked from this site, including the NHS App, Accurx (online appointment requests), or NHS.uk. Those services are governed by their own accessibility policies.

This statement was prepared by Qinete, who are responsible for building and maintaining this site.

2. Our Commitment to Accessibility

Brunswick Surgery is committed to making this website accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities, older patients, and those using assistive technology such as screen readers, voice control or keyboard navigation.

We believe that all patients should be able to access information about their health and their GP practice online, regardless of any physical, sensory, cognitive or technological barrier.

This site has been designed and built with the following accessibility principles in mind:

  • Clear, plain English throughout — short sentences and plain language
  • Sufficient colour contrast between text and backgrounds
  • All images have descriptive alternative text, or are marked as decorative where appropriate
  • The site is fully navigable by keyboard without a mouse
  • All forms include clearly labelled fields and error messages
  • Page structure uses semantic HTML headings in correct hierarchical order
  • All navigation landmarks are labelled with ARIA roles
  • Font sizes are relative (rem/em) and respond to browser text size preferences
  • The site is responsive and usable on mobile, tablet and desktop devices
  • A Google Translate function is available for patients who prefer another language

3. Technical Standard

This website aims to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA — the standard required by the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018 for public sector websites.

The four WCAG principles require that websites are:

  • Perceivable — information must be presentable in ways users can perceive (e.g. text alternatives for images)
  • Operable — users must be able to operate the interface (e.g. keyboard navigation)
  • Understandable — information and interface must be understandable (e.g. clear language, consistent navigation)
  • Robust — content must be interpreted reliably by assistive technologies (e.g. valid HTML, ARIA labels)

4. Compliance Status

This website is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The known issues and areas of non-compliance are listed in Section 5 below.

The following areas have been tested and are considered to meet the standard:

Area Status Notes
Keyboard navigation ✓ Passes All pages navigable without a mouse. Skip-to-content link present.
Colour contrast — body text ✓ Passes All body text meets 4.5:1 contrast ratio against backgrounds.
Image alternative text ✓ Passes All content images have descriptive alt text. Decorative images use alt="".
Form labels and error messages ✓ Passes All form fields have associated labels. Required fields are indicated. Errors are described in text.
Page language declared ✓ Passes All pages declare lang="en" on the html element.
Heading structure ✓ Passes Headings follow a logical h1→h2→h3 hierarchy on all pages.
Navigation landmarks ✓ Passes Header, nav, main and footer landmarks are present and labelled with ARIA.
Responsive design ✓ Passes Site is fully usable on screen widths from 320px upward.
Link purpose ✓ Passes All links have descriptive text or aria-label. No "click here" links.
PDF documents ⚠ Partial Some PDFs (e.g. non-English speakers leaflets) are not fully accessible. See Section 5.
Colour contrast — interactive elements ✓ Passes Button and navigation colours audited and updated. Search button, Home CTA and Book Online button backgrounds darkened to meet the 4.5:1 minimum ratio. Confirmed using Eye-Able automated audit and WebAIM Contrast Checker.
Focus indicators ✓ Passes Visible focus rings confirmed on all links, buttons and form fields during keyboard navigation and NVDA screen reader testing in June 2026.

5. Known Accessibility Issues

We are aware of the following issues and are working to address them:

PDF documents

Several PDF documents linked from this site — including the translated patient registration leaflets on the Non-English Speakers page — were not created by Brunswick Surgery and may not be fully accessible to screen reader users. We are unable to modify these documents as they are produced by NHS England.

If you need the information in an alternative format, please contact us (see Section 7).

Google Translate

The Google Translate widget is a third-party tool and its accessibility is outside our direct control. Some automated translations may be imperfect. If you need assistance in another language, please call us on 020 8390 5321 and we will arrange interpreter support.

Third-party embedded content

YouTube videos embedded on some pages are provided by a third party. Auto-generated captions are available on most NHS-produced videos via YouTube's own controls.

6. How We Tested This Website

This website was tested using the following methods:

  • Manual keyboard-only navigation of all pages
  • Screen reader testing using NVDA
  • Colour contrast checking using the WebAIM Contrast Checker
  • Automated audit using Eye-Able WCAG audit (three full cycles during development), Chrome WAVE extension, and axe DevTools
  • Mobile device testing on iOS and Android at various screen sizes
  • HTML validation using the W3C Markup Validation Service

Testing was carried out by the web developer, Steve Knight (Qinete), in June 2026. We aim to re-test the site at least annually or after any significant structural changes.

An independent third-party automated accessibility audit was carried out using Eye-Able during development. Manual testing, including NVDA screen reader testing, was completed in June 2026.
